There are basically 4 major brands on the market:
Schwinn ? This is the oldest manufacturer of Spinner bikes. They introduced Spinning to the world when the creator of the Spinning program; Johnny G took his concept bikes to them nearly 15 years ago. Their current of bikes called the AC series or Authentic Cycles are the most evolved commercial grade bikes on the market. They use magnetic resistance, the AC?s have what?s considered the most evolved dynamic for/aft handlebars, also employing ISIS technology in the drivetrain.
Star Trac ? Star Trac took over the manufacturing rights of the licensed Spinner bikes when Schwinn and Johnny G parted ways nearly 10 years ago. Star Trac and Schwinn oscillate with the #1 spot, combined these two companies produce an estimated 75-80 % of the bikes used for indoor cycling worldwide.
Lemond - Lemond was the first mainstream bike to use a belt drive. Its lack of perimeter weighting however produces a non fluid, empty hollow pedal stroke. In the winter of xxxx, Lemond filed for bankruptcy.
Keiser - Another belt driven bike, Keiser was literally invisible until they unveiled the M3. The M3 employs a magnetic resistance system and Keiser was the first to implement a wattage display on their console. The odd angle the handlebars raise make the Keiser M3 an ill-fitting bike for many riders. The M3 also boasts the lightest commercial production non perimeter weighted flywheel in the industry. This creates a very hollow, bouncy pedal stroke. Recently Keiser released what they call the all new M3 Plus. The reality is the M3 plus is not new at all, its an M3 with a nightlight on the console and a very odd handlebar design.
There is also an aggressive new company fighting for market share, Freemotion. Jeff Wimmer of StudioCycles was brought on board as a consultant, bought a few of the bikes, and the results were very underwhelming. The flywheel claims to be perimeter weighted, yet its an astonishingly 4 pounds lighter than the Schwinn AC magnetic flywheel that FM seemingly knocked off. The bikes have proven difficult to disassemble and optimize, even for the most respected team of techs. StudioCycles sent the bikes back and severed its relationship with the FM camp. It seemed like Freemotion could not get the chain drive right, so they?ve opted for a belt drive with an unproven technology in the indoor cycling arena. Its described as a belt that feels like a chain. Confusing.
Here are some fun facts: When you buy new bikes, the sale persons sometime don?t tell you that a per bike assembly charge has been added to your invoice or bill.
